Why I love this image…

Welcome to part 5 in my series of blog posts where I select my favourite photograph from each wedding I shoot during 2016. It’s fair to say that the wedding of Claire & Tamblyn at the historic Midland Hotel in Manchester was quite unusual in the sense that there were only six guests, the smallest wedding I’d photographed previous to this one was a couple of years back when there were twenty guests in attendance.

I’ve photographed weddings at the Midland Hotel before, quite understandably it is a very popular venue. On this occasion I genuinely felt like a fly on the wall of someone’s living room and it was a wonderful experience to witness and capture such an intimate ceremony.

This particular image is my personal favourite from the day. The story looks pretty straightforward (excited groom awaits the arrival of his bride) but I’ve since learned that the reason that Tamblyn is smiling so broadly is because he could actually see Claire’s reflection in the mirror behind me as she walked towards the front of the room. At the time I didn’t even notice a mirror in the room.

I dare say it’ll be a while before I ever get to capture such an intimate wedding again and I greatly admire Claire & Tamblyn for sticking to their guns and having the wedding that they truly wanted. I’m in the midst of editing their images and I’ll look forward to handing them over in the next week or so.

I hope you like the picture!

Peace is free
